President Donald Trump stated Monday that he’ll award golfer Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, after Woods gained his fifth Masters title over the weekend.
“Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the good victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to tell him that due to his unimaginable Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, extra importantly, LIFE, I might be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!” Trump tweeted Monday afternoon.
Woods’ victory marked his first Masters victory in 14 years, after a collection of back issues and private issues threatened to end his profession.
In 2017, he underwent a spinal fusion surgery, and was later arrested and charged with driving underneath the influence. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was placed on a diversion program, returning to the circuit in 2018.
The Medal of Freedom recognizes individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the safety or national interests of the USA, world peace, cultural or other vital public or personal endeavors,” in response to the chief order designating the award.
Trump, an avid golfer, was photographed on the inexperienced in Florida with Woods and professional-golfer Jack Nicklaus in February.
Trump has introduced the Medal of Freedom to numerous athletes since taking workplace, including Alan Web page, Roger Staubach, and a posthumous award to Babe Ruth.
