Review: The National push their art to an even higher place

The brand new album from The National starts off as you may anticipate: There’s the normal melancholy surrounded by complicated, layered devices. However simply past the two-minute mark on the primary monitor something unusual occurs.

A lady’s voice merely takes over.

Gail Ann Dorsey, recognized for enjoying in David Bowie’s band, steps up as singer Matt Berninger fades, and the 2 sing in harmony until the abrupt end of “You Had Your Soul With You.”

It’s no quirk: Ladies’s voices are throughout “I Am Straightforward to Discover,” a more dense, difficult and sophisticated album than some other National output. This isn’t a set of alt-rock songs. That is high art.

The album is produced by filmmaker Mike Mills, who directed “20th Century Ladies,” and it’s accompanied by a 26-minute film by Mills starring Alicia Vikander, who also graces the album cowl. The album and movie, which makes use of six tunes, are described as “playfully hostile siblings.”

The film charts the life of a lady from child to dying and, fittingly, The Nationwide invite female singers — Dorsey, Mina Tindle, Lisa Hannigan, Sharon Van Etten, Kate Stables and Eve Owen — to hitch on the 16-monitor set.

Their voices — plus the addition of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus on a number of tracks — elevate materials that’s already elevated to a baroque degree. Fans of The National will gleefully scale their chilly, arty new heights; newcomers might get turned off quick. “I Am Straightforward to Discover” is not to be embraced; it is to be admired.

Lyrically, there’s Berninger’s previous unhappy-sack strategy — “I’m simply so uninterested in fascinated with the whole lot,” he sings on “Quiet Mild.” But there’s also the unusual and fantastic “Not In Kansas,” a reminiscence track that identify-checks Annette Bening, R.E.M., Neil Armstrong and his Aunt Angela. There are few musicians on the market together with his present for phrases: “Smidges of dangerous ecstasy/Should have left it in my pocket/With my Christianity and my rocket.”

Other highlights embrace the sensible, swelling “Rylan”; the ethereal “Oblivions,” with strings and army drumming; and the achingly lovely “Mild Years,” constructed around a simple piano riff.

Elsewhere The Nationwide get too pretentious for their very own good, like on the tedious “Dust Swirls in Strange Mild.” However there’s no denying the band’s astonishing care and thoughtfulness; it’s straightforward to seek out.
