NEW YORK (AP) — An elderly Manhattan couple died in a blaze that engulfed their luxury high-rise condo before daybreak Saturday and despatched flames roaring out the home windows.
Hearth officers say the 85-yr-previous lady was pronounced lifeless at the famed River House co-op on East 52nd Road. Her 89-yr-previous husband was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Middle but died of his injuries. Three firefighters have been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The hearth started simply after 5 a.m. within the couple’s ninth-flooring condominium, filling its dozen or so rooms with smoke. Officers say the lady was found unresponsive, with severe burns.
The cause of the blaze at the Art Deco building overlooking the FDR Drive and the East River is underneath investigation.
Police didn’t immediately launch the names of the victims.
The palatial River Home complicated was inbuilt 1931, with a 26-story tower and two 15-story wings. It’s been house to notable residents including Henry Kissinger, Uma Thurman and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross Jr. Present costs for flats range from about $3 million to $14 million, in accordance with the Road Straightforward actual estate database.
